HB 515 (Timber Harvesting) to Get Sponsor
Testimony on May 13
It appears that HB 515 sponsored by Rep. Ross
McGregor (R-Springfield) which deals with the timber theft issue, will get
sponsor introduction and testimony on May 13 in front of the House Agriculture,
as reported by Committee Chairman Dave Hall at a recent legislative
meeting. It appears that only sponsor testimony will take place that day,
which means that opponent and proponent testimony will take place at a later
date. Meetings with Committee members to discuss the bill have taken
place and will continue to take place this week.
Ohio Leads Country Again for Tree City USA
For the 33rd year in a row, Ohio leads the
country with the number of recognized Tree City USA communities. For
2014, there are 244 Tree City USA communities in Ohio, a recognition which is
given by the National Arbor Day Foundation and administered in Ohio by the
ODNR, Division of Forestry. Half of everyone living in Ohio lives in a
Tree City USA. In order for a community to achieve the award, it must
have a tree care program which includes having a community ordinance for trees,
fund a tree care program with at least $2 per capita, have a voluntary advisory
committee to help oversee the program, and celebrate an arbor day community
program, including a mayoral proclamation. Here is a brief article
in the Cleveland Plain Dealer on the program. You can see a list of
Ohio Tree City USA communities here.
Paul Bunyan Show Archives
ago, OFA received copies of two previous Paul Bunyan Show programs, one from
1970 when the show was at the Ohio State Fairgrounds and another when the show
started at Hocking College in 1974. After receiving these, we thought it
would be helpful to create an archive of past Paul Bunyan Show programs as well
as any other information from past shows. OFA has a copy of the first
Paul Bunyan Show Program in 1957 when the show started in McArthur (Vinton
County) and has copies of the more recent shows. But programs from many
of the shows in between are lacking. If anyone has show programs from over the years OFA would like to have copies.
Northern Long-Eared Bat Proposed as
Last fall, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
(USF&WS) proposed that the northern long-eared bat (NLEB) be placed on the
endangered species list, largely as a result of declining populations due to
white-nosed syndrome. Following the issuance of that proposal, USF&WS
further issued an interim management guidance that contains
management recommendations on what they believe should be done to protect the
species. OFA and forestry interests need to pay particular attention to
this guidance, as well as other actions on the bat, as they could have a
profound impact on forest management on both public and private lands in the
bat range, which is essentially the eastern half of North America. Here is a statement of concern from a coalition of Department of
Natural Resource agencies from Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin sent
to the USF&WS over the potential impact of management restrictions on
public and private woodlands. You should review that statement as it
describes appropriately the potential impact of the endangered species
listing. One of the compelling points of concern is that although the bat
decline stems from disease problems, the recommendations impose major
restrictions on forest management actions.
