Hogfuel, Biomass Surpluses Not Just In Ohio
The Ohio wood industry knows that markets for sawdust, chips, slabs, and other biomass and hogfuel products have tightened significantly since the closure of the WestRock paper mill in Coshocton last fall. RISI reports in their July "Woodfiber & Biomass Markets” report, that other areas of the country are seeing significant market problems due to other factors. The US South is seeing significant fuel wood surpluses due to the fall in natural gas prices. This is leading many consuming mills to convert to this lower cost alternative. RISI also reports that, in the US Northeast, not only is natural gas prices causing wood surpluses, but unseasonably mild weather and regulatory restrictions on customers in Massachusetts are adding to the problem.
