ODNR Announces "Forest of Honor” Inductees
On Wednesday October 12, 2016, more than 100 people from around the state celebrated the induction of two individuals and one organization into the Division of Forestry’s "Forest of Honor” at Zaleski State Forest. It was a gorgeous fall day in southern Ohio as Glenn Waggy, Dr. Paul Mechling, and The Nature Conservancy were honored with commemorative plaques and a live tree planting. ODNR Director, Jim Zehringer, was on hand to recognize not only these three awardees, but also many current and retired Division of Forestry employees. At the end of the proceedings, a great pot luck luncheon was provided for all in attendance. See a complete write-up on the inductees here.

Sector Spotlight: Furniture – From "The Hardwood Leader”
Even with decent tailwinds - including steady housing growth, low mortgage rates, low inflation, low unemployment and rising wages—the furniture industry isn’t carrying much momentum into fall. New furniture orders were down 17% in Jul and were 5% lower than in Jul 2015 (Smith Leonard). Rising consumer confidence in Aug provided yet another tailwind. As a result, the industry is asking itself why business isn’t better than it is. One answer, Smith Leonard says, appears to be economic uncertainty surrounding the presidential election. Several emerging design trends also appear to be cutting into furniture sales, according to Furniture Today/Home of the Future. Kitchen islands are replacing kitchen/dining room tables as the main social gathering place in the home. Secondly, master baths and closets are growing in size and cutting into space for free-standing furniture. In addition, traditional living rooms are getting squeezed by other areas, including outdoor living spaces, or are positioned as "hearth” rooms requiring smaller-scale furniture. While furniture industry growth will outpace the U.S. economy in 2016, it won’t be double the GDP growth—as it has been in recent years—barring a year-end rush on home purchasing ahead of a potential Fed rate increase.
