Tree Climbing, Limb Cutting, Chainsaw Monster
I recently came across a video at this link that shows a chainsaw wielding machine using rubber tires to climb a tree and cut off all its branches. Someone is touting this as new technology, but didn’t I see someone using a machine almost identical to this in Ohio to prune pine trees back in the 1970’s??
Cambridge Ohio Harvest Trees in City Forest
The city of Cambridge, Ohio, host to the annual Paul Bunyan Show for the past twelve years, is walking-the-walk when it comes to proper forest management. Read the article published in the Daily Jeffersonian newspaper, talking about the years long process that has lead to a timber harvest being conducted by an OFA member company.

From The Hardwood Leader – The Big Picture
Following is “The Big Picture” from the November 2017 Hardwood Leader, produced and distributed by Hardwood Publishing Inc. This “Big Picture” summary discusses the current strong demand, both domestically and for export markets, of lumber and logs.

Sales of lumber and logs to both domestic and export markets should be steady to stronger for the balance of the year, with export shipments easily setting a new all-time benchmark. After 100 months of economic growth—and 13 straight months of manufacturing growth—there are no signs of slowing.

Sawmills continue to report strong order files and, with log supplies improving, it appears that labor will once again be the hold-up to higher production. Truck shortages will also work to delay some shipments, and raise freight rates on most of the others. KD lumber production is largely spoken for well into or through Nov, and Dec orders
will book up soon ahead of the Chinese New Year. Green lumber is becoming more available, but there are no reports from sawmills yet of any major concerns. With the exception of Soft Maple and upper-grade White Oak, lumber pricing should generally be firm through year end.

We expect continued growth through year-end in every low-grade market but crane mats, with flooring-grade lumber and pallet cants especially strong and rail tie demand building towards a considerably better 2018. The strong stock market and growing economy will keep home construction growing at a good clip next year, and, along with it, demand for flooring, moulding, cabinets and furniture.

Glatfelter Foresters Sweep FRA Technical Writing Awards
The Forest Resource Association (FRA) recently announced that foresters from Glatfelter Company in Chillicothe took 1st and 2nd place in the Appalachian Region Technical Writing Awards for 2017. Doug Schwemlein won the first place award for Technical Release 17-R-1, Avenza Maps Mobile App for Forest Operations Field Work. This Technical Release explains and illustrates how the Avenza Maps mobile app can help a forester cruise timber, collect GPS data such as roads and sale boundaries, and share geospatial maps with logging contractors.

Shawn Gragg and Kyle Bush took second place with their Technical Release 16-R-22, Log Bridges Improve Harvest Site Access in Appalachians. This Technical Release gives two case study examples of how log bridges can be an inexpensive and effective alternative to extensive road building when it comes to crossing streams.
