Workers Compensation Notes
CareWorksComp, OFA’s Group Ratings provider, provided the following information that is applicable to all employers.
Unemployment Taxable Wage Base Increases for 2018: Ohio employers will be paying more unemployment taxes in 2018 mainly due to an increase in the taxable wage base. The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) has raised the taxable wage base from $9,000 per employee to $9,500 per employee. In addition to this increase, the tax table used by ODJFS has shifted upward for 2018 which will also have an impact on the amount of unemployment taxes Ohio employers will pay.

CareWorksComp can assist you in controlling unemployment claims and taxes.  Employers who would like an analysis of their tax notice, or to learn more about different tax options (such as common/joint rating) may contact Kammy Staton, our Unemployment Manager, at 614.526.7165 or kammy.staton@careworkscomp.com

Also, here is a PDF, “SafetyGrantsHandout”, explaining how employers can apply for Safety Intervention Grants that can be used for the purchase of ergonomic, safety and/or industrial equipment.

Winter Safety Alert
Any day now, we could be hit with cold and snowy/icy weather. There are a few things that you should do to help protect yourself, your family, and your employees as we move into the winter season. Following are a few of these things.

Vehicle Safety

  •  Make sure your vehicle is ready for winter, including: proper antifreeze, proper windshield washer fluid, proper tire pressure, and most importantly, tires with proper tread depth to handle snowy/slushy conditions.
  • Carry warm gloves, a hat, boots, and a warm coat at all times in case of a breakdown.
  • Keep a safety kit in the car that includes a warm blanket, some emergency food rations, a flashlight and extra batteries, and a small folding shovel.

Home

  •  Keep walkways, and especially stairways, free of snow and ice. Use an ice melting products when applicable.
Install, or replace batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Keep cut Christmas trees properly watered to decrease chances of a house fire.

Workplace

  •  Just like at home, keep walkways and outside stairways and ramps clear of snow and ice. Use ice melting products when applicable.
  • It is especially important to keep areas just outside of doorways ice free, as it is often hard to see this when stepping outside into bright sunlight.
  • In cold environments, wear proper clothing and footwear. Dress in layers to allow for warming up or cooling down as necessary. Remember, sweating and then cooling down rapidly can cause hypothermia.
