No pets allowed! We love dogs, but there will be forestry equipment running live throughout the grounds and it is a very loud and scary place for pets!

Solar drying provides an excellent way to dry lumber inexpensively with limited knowledge of the drying process. With kiln dried lumber you can expand your market and add value.  In this session you will learn the basics of solar lumber drying with a focus on the design and operation of the Virginia Tech Solar Kiln. Plans for the kiln will be provided. Presenter, Brian H. Bond is an Associate Professor and Extension Specialist in the Department of Sustainable Biomaterials at Virginia Tech.

Various sawing patterns are used to maximize the value of material produced from a hardwood log. In this session different sawing methods will be discussed, including grade sawing and quartersawing. This session will include sawing exercises to not only demonstrate the topics presented but allow the participants to apply their newly learned knowledge.

Things don’t have to work that way. In this session learn how to write a simple yet effective business plan, how to market your products, and how to grow your business effectively with minimal cost.

Why Submit a Notice of intent (NOI) for your Timber Harvest?
This voluntary program is designed to assist woodland landowners, loggers and foresters with the pre-planning of logging activity. The program is designed to help the responsible parties select the best management practices (BMP's) that will reduce soil erosion and maintain the harvest site to state standards. Wood Magic is a program that demonstrates the importance of wood in everyday life. Participants will learn about what foresters do and why what they do is important. You’ll learn a little about identifying trees, growth rings, wood properties, decay, musical instruments and forest fires in a fun, interactive presentation. Everyone will leave with a wooden bubble blower!

Crossties North American railroads use about 22 million crossties each year, and many of those ties are cut from Appalachian hardwood. In this program, learn what the railroads have set forth as requirements for crossties. We’ll discuss how to get the most money from prospective tie logs: the bucking decisions you make in the woods and the way you choose to saw your tie logs can significantly affect your income. International Lumberjack Competition (Competitor Registration Form)
Lumberjacks from the United States and beyond will show their skills in this action packed competition. Athletes will compete in the underhand chop, open chainsaw, axe throwing, standing block, spring board, Jack and Jill crosscut, two person crosscut and always a fan favorite the hot saws, and new this year, the Jill and Jill crosscut, and women’s underhand chop. The Paul Bunyan Show will also be the home of the Stihl Timbersports national championship competition in the hot saws. The US Title in this event will be awarded at the Show!

Many small businesses and homeowners would like to know how they can dry their own lumber as cheaply as possible, and solar drying is often the first type of dry kiln considered. We’ll briefly discuss solar kilns, but mostly about how to dry wood with as little degrade as possible. Proper drying usually means having more control over the drying conditions than solar kilns offer, so we’ll also discuss the advantages of dehumidification dry kilns for small wood businesses.
