The National Association of State Foresters' Forest Markets Committee releases a Weekly Newsletter full of all things Forestry and Forest Products Industry related. Each week’s newsletter has articles about: Forest Markets, Housing, Working Forests, New Products and Technology, and Renewable Energy. This week’s newsletter contains an article that discusses the impact of low oil & gas prices on the biomass fuel markets. See the complete newsletter here.
ODNR Outdoor Burning Regulations Reminder
Every spring, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) regulates the hours available for outdoor burning of debris. This is due to the heightened opportunity for fast spreading wildfires because of the amount of dry leaves and grass available for fuel, combined with springtime winds. Please see the News Release from ODNR on outdoor burning regulations for this spring.
Northeast Ohio Forestry Association (NEOFA) Newsletter
Here is the March 2018 edition of the NEOFA newsletter. It contains information about their February meeting topic, which was a presentation on forest birds by Jeff Harvey. Jeff is president of the Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley and is the owner of the Wild Birds Unlimited store in Boardman, Ohio. There is also information on their upcoming March 15th meeting, which will feature quest speakers Mark and Randy Ohlin, discussing their hobby of locating and digging up wells and privy’s that date back to Civil War times.
Lima, Ohio Looking To Improve City’s Tree Scape
Lima Ohio is looking to use its Urban Forest Council to add more trees and better maintain those that are currently growing. Read about how this city is trying to recover its urban forest from the devastation of the Emerald Ash Borer from the early 2000’s. 
Ohio EPA Proposes Rule Changes to Wetland Water Quality Standards
As part of the 5-year rule review requirement of the Ohio Revised Code, the Ohio EPA – Division of Surface Water is proposing rule changes in Chapter 3745-1 of the Ohio Administrative Code. This rulemaking includes amendments to five rules that address water quality standards for wetlands, including antidegradation protections and review procedures. These rules are OAC 3745-1-50 to 3745-1-54. Get the details on these changes, and how to make public comments on them, (deadline is 5:00 PM, April 3, 2018) here. 
New Forest Service Chief Resigns Suddenly- Sex Scandal May Be To Blame
Tony Tooke, a nearly 40 year employee of the U.S. Forest Service, was named as its new Chief just a short time ago. He resigned this week under allegations of misconduct with subordinates prior to his becoming Chief. This comes on the heels of other reports of harassment and retaliation within the department. E.B Miller Memorial Scholarship Application Deadline April 15
The deadline for applications for the Ohio Forestry Association Foundation’s E.B. Miller memorial Scholarship is April 15, 2018. If you know a student that is going into, or is currently enrolled in, a course of study in a natural resources field, have them fill put an application for this worthwhile scholarship.The application form is here, or can be found on the OFA website.
Pennsylvania Forestry Association (PFA) March 2018 e-Newsletter
For those of you on Ohio’s eastern border, you may be interested in some of the information in the PFA March 2018 e-newsletter. This issue highlights the association’s standing committees and seeks nominations for some of their awards.
