How Safe Is Your Office?
I was recently informed of a worker in another state forestry association office taking a fall and breaking an arm. I don’t know how this person fell in the office, but I can think of several opportunities. Did they trip over an extension cord? Over an open file drawer? Trip on something cluttering a walkway or stairway? Catch their foot on a rug that had one end flipped up? The point is, there are many ways an office environment can hold hazards for office employees. I am sure this broken arm hurt just as bad as a woods or mill employee breaking theirs on a piece of wood or machinery. If OSHA comes to your office to discuss/investigate an incident with an employee in the mill or woods, will they find violations in your office also? Keep the following things in mind for keeping your office employees safe.

  • Are all walkways and stairs clear of tripping hazards?
  • Are your storage areas clutter free and well lit?
  • Do people use the right tool for the job? (Self-retracting box cutters or scissors instead of open bladed knives)
  • Are extension cords used where they shouldn’t be?
  • Do you have fire extinguishers located and marked properly?
  • Do you have a properly stocked and located first aid kit?
  • Are space heaters being used under cluttered desks or with extension cords?
  • Are exit doors properly marked?
  • Do you keep sidewalks and entryways clear of ice and snow in the winter?
  • Do you have an emergency response plan for the office?
  • Are your office employees receiving safety training?

These are only some of the things that need to be addressed to maintain a safe and proper workplace for office employees. Here are a few office injuries that I have seen or been made aware of in office environments.

  • The aforementioned broken arm caused by a fall.
  • An employee cutting toward himself on a cardboard box and putting the knife in his leg.
  • Someone used an angle grinder instead of a saw to cut a hole in a wall. The grinder spun back rapidly when it caught on the drywall and injured his arm.
  • A person was driving a small nail in a wall to hang a picture when the nail flipped back and hit him in the eye. He was not wearing safety glasses.
There are companies out there that specialize incoming to your workplace and performing a safety audit, so that you can fix the issues before they become a problem with OSHA. I believe that OSHA will do the same thing if requested. Contact OFA if you need a couple names of companies that can assist with this type of safety auditing and training.

Environmental Quiz for Children, Students
In this month’s newsletter by Dovetail Partners, is an updated environmental quiz first used in 1991. This quiz is a good tool to get young people in a productive learning discussion about today’s forests and the overall environment.
