Wil Fuhrman & Janice Cowell, recipients of NEOFA’s 2018 Outstanding Woodlot Management Award, will host a twilight tour at their tree farm on Wednesday evening, June 27th. Wil & Janice are extending an invitation for us to enjoy a show and tell tour of their tree farming activities.

In the case of a rain postponement, the tour will be rescheduled for the following evening, Thursday, June 28th - same time and agenda.

The address is 44403 State Route 517, Columbiana, Ohio 44408. We will have our NEOFA Forestry Field Day sign at the entrance to the long gravel lane leading back to the home. You will also see a large sign “Fuhrman” at the driveway. From the intersection of SR 558 and SR 517, just west of SR 7 at East Fairfield, follow SR 517 west a little more than a mile to the Fuhrman property. Follow a gravel driveway through the woods back to a cabin and pond. It’s a beautiful setting that Wil & Janice have worked hard to create.

Wil and Janice had a partial harvest of their timber done back in 2013. Hillcrest Lumber did the logging. Many of us will recall our field trip last summer to tour Hillcrest’s sawmill facilities. We will have the opportunity to see how the woodlot has reacted now 5 years later – pros & cons. Wil & Janice will share their feelings about the experience.

More recently, Wil & Janice have been concentrating hours upon hours on brush clearing (lots of honeysuckle) to plant hardwood seedlings. Tree shelters are used to protect the young trees from deer, rabbits, and other wildlife. You will also get to see Wil & Janice’s seedling nursery where they pot and hold over seedlings until a site is prepared and ready for planting.

Wil hosted one of NEOFA’s Chainsaw Safety and Tree Felling Training classes and served a mean pot of chili for lunch. You’ve got to ask for the recipe..

We will take a walking tour to view the effects of all the good forestry stewardship work that Wil & Janice have accomplished. It’s an opportunity to pick up some good ideas and learn from what has worked and what hasn’t.

For anyone with mobility issues, we will have a few ATV’s/RTV’s on site that you can hitch a ride on. Not that we are in desperate need, but if anyone wants to bring along a side-by-side ATV/RTV, please contact Wil or Janice at the phone numbers shown below to let them know. There is room along the mowed sides of the long driveway for off-loading.

A picnic meal will start around 5:45 pm. It wo.uld help if you could bring lawn chairs with you. We will head for the woods around 6:30-6:45.    We are looking forward to you joining us for this show and tell tour and great fellowship. These member- hosted twilight tours are great ways to get to know each other better.

If you plan to attend, please contact Wil (305) 310-6927 or Janice (954) 398-1813, so they can have an attendance estimate for food preparation purposes. It will also assist us in contacting you in case of postponement.
