This class satisfies Master Logger Recertification requirements for Chainsaw, Best Management Practices and General Subject.

Hardwood Log Grading (additional fee applies, purchase tickets online at OhioForest.org or Show Office)
When purchasing or selling logs, you must first determine its value, which requires estimating the volume, quality and value of potential products produced. This session includes a field portion where the techniques will be applied. Those attending should come prepared with a measuring tape and something to write with. A calculator may also be useful.

Introduction to Sawing Logs Using Different Techniques - Part 1 (additional fee applies, purchase tickets online at OhioForest.org or Show Office)

Various sawing patterns are used to maximize the value of material produced from a hardwood log. In this session, different sawing methods and the best way to apply each will be discussed, including live sawing, cant sawing and grade sawing.

The various sawing patterns discussed in “Introduction to Sawing Logs Using Different Methods” will be applied to hardwood logs. Participants will be asked to apply the knowledge gained in the first session during sawing exercises.

When selling hardwood lumber, there must be a consistent way to estimate its value. This seminar will introduce participants to the standard grading rules of National Hardwood Lumber Grading and demonstrate how they are applied. Participants are expected to participate in the application of the grading rules. Bring a calculator and something to write with.

International Lumberjack Competition

Lumberjacks from the United States and beyond will show their skills in this action packed competition. Athletes will compete in the underhand chop, open chainsaw, axe throwing, standing block, spring board, Jack and Jill crosscut, two person crosscut and always a fan favorite the hot saws, and new this year, the Jill and Jill crosscut, and women’s underhand chop. The Paul Bunyan Show will also be the home of the Stihl Timbersports national championship competition in the single buck. The US Title in this event will be awarded at the Show!

The price of properly kiln-dried lumber is often double the price of green lumber and being able to supply dry lumber increases the number of markets that one can sell to. This seminar will cover the basic information that a small operator should know and consider regarding the drying of hardwood and softwood lumber including suggested drying methods and equipment for small operators, the basics of how wood dries and defects associated with drying.

Ladies, you won’t want to miss this! Never ran a saw before? No problem, the folks at Husqvarna will get you schooled in safe operation. Be sure to sign up at the Husqvarna booth by 10:00 am. The winner takes home a brand new Husqvarna chainsaw, and everyone takes home something! Husqvarna provides all of the safety equipment, but you must have closed toe shoes to compete.

Need wood? Then you will definitely want to get in on the Wood Auction Action. All timber processed throughout the show will be sold to the highest bidder. Firewood, sawn lumber and more! This year there will be lots of firewood. Meet at the Show office at 1:45 to participate. You do not need a number.
