Introduction to Hardwood Lumber Grading (additional fee applies, purchase tickets at OhioForest.org or Show Office or pre-register here.)
This seminar will introduce participants to the standard grading rules of the National Hardwood

Lumber Grading and demonstrate how they are applied. Participants are expected to participate in the application of the grading rules. Bring a calculator and something to write with. This course provides a good foundation for the sawing for grade course. Presenter, Brian H. Bond is a Professor and Extension Specialist in the Department of Sustainable Biomaterials at Virginia Tech.

Sawing for Grade and Patterns in Hardwoods - Part 1  (additional fee applies. Pre-registration is recommended, or purchase tickets at the Show Office) 
Various sawing patterns are used to maximize the value of material produced from a hardwood log. In this session different sawing methods will be discussed, including grade sawing and quatersawing. Part 1 of this session will focus on presenting and discussing the methods and Part 2 will focus sawing exercises to demonstrate the topics presented and allow the participants to apply their newly learned knowledge. New this year - the sawmill will be set-up outside the seminar building. Solar drying provides an excellent way to dry small quantities of lumber inexpensively with limited knowledge of the drying process. With kiln dried lumber you can expand your market and add value. In this session, you will learn the basics of solar lumber drying and its limitations. The seminar will focus on the design and operation of the Virginia Tech Solar Kiln. Plans for the kiln will be provided.

How to Avoid Defects When Drying Lumber  (additional fee applies. Pre-registration is recommended, or purchase tickets at the Show Office)  
Defects that occur during lumber drying reduce the value and volume of usable material. The goal of this seminar is to discuss the causes and defects that occur during drying and to provide solutions to the problem. Specifically, the focus will be on how to avoid stain, end splits, surface checks and bow, twist, cup and crook.

International Lumberjack Competition

Lumberjacks from the United States and beyond will show their skills in this action packed competition. Athletes will compete in the underhand chop, open chainsaw, axe throwing, standing block, spring board, Jack and Jill crosscut, two person crosscut and always a fan favorite the hot saws, and new this year, the Jill and Jill crosscut, and women’s underhand chop. The Paul Bunyan Show will also be the home of the Stihl Timbersports national championship competition in the single buck. The US Title in this event will be awarded at the Show!

This seminar will focus on the basic properties of solid wood for burning to product heat. Topics covered will include:

  • What are the best species to use and why?
  • What factors affect the amount of creosote produced when burned?
  • What moisture content should wood be and how should wood be stored?
  • Higher heating values, what are they and how are they determined for different species?
  • What factors can affect the heat produced when wood burns?
  • What is a cord, a face cord, a rick or a pickup truck load of material and how much variation can exist for these measurements?
  • What is wood ash and how much should I expect for different species?
  • What insects attack firewood and how to prevent them?
  • What is better to burn hardwoods or softwoods?

We will talk about Farm & Timber revenue streams and how to account for them. We will discuss whether running your entity as a business as opposed to a long-term gain produces the best tax results. We will go over how to figure your cost basis on your timber sale. We will also discuss what expenses you can write off and what you can depreciate.

No problem, the folks at Husqvarna will get you schooled in safe operation. Be sure to sign up at the Husqvarna booth by 10:00 am. The winner takes home a brand new Husqvarna chainsaw, and everyone takes home something! Husqvarna provides all of the safety equipment, but you must have closed toe shoes to compete.

Need wood? Then you will definitely want to get in on the Wood Auction Action. All timber processed throughout the show will be sold to the highest bidder. Firewood, sawn lumber and more! This year there will be lots of firewood! Meet at the Show office at 1:45 to participate. You do not need a number.
